When J.D. Mastin arrived at George Rogers Clark High School for his senior year, he hoped to take the team to the next level.
As a team member that won the school’s first postseason game since 2019, Mastin did so – and has been recognized for it.
At a recent event, Mastin signed a scholarship to play college football at Thomas More University in Kenton County.
“We had schools that came in here [during recruiting], and we were able to talk face-to-face,” said Mastin, who went on multiple college visits. “Whenever I chose Thomas More, I left…knowing that I wanted to go there.”
Mastin, formerly a student-athlete at Goodpasture Christian School in Madison, TN, was attracted to GRC while looking to transfer.
According to his own X account, the multitalented Mastin measures 6’2 “tall and weighs 215 pounds. He caught the attention of George Rogers Clark High School Offensive Coordinator Jordan Ray.
“The biggest factor [with] J.D. is his work ethic,” Ray said. “He just really came in, and he was honest and upfront with [his goals] and a clear vision.”
Mastin started the year as the team’s quarterback, throwing for nearly 400 yards and four touchdowns in the team’s first two games – including three in a dramatic, come-from-behind win against powerhouse Belfry in Pike County.
Mastin unselfishly took on additional roles as the season continued, with senior Sam Clements substituting as quarterback.
This included playing tight end on offense and defensive end on defense, allowing him to showcase his versatility and continue to contribute.
“Having guys that are willing to play multiple positions just to see the team succeed…that’s few and far between,” complimented Ray.
“One day Coach [Joe] Chirico [came] up to me and said, ‘What do you think of also playing on the defensive side of the ball?’” Mastin said. “I was all for it. It really doesn’t matter where I’m at as long as I’m playing the game and able to make plays.”
During Mastin’s ceremony, he was surrounded by several individuals – including close family and teammates.
“It made me feel great,” he said. “That always means a lot.”
In the future, Mastin hopes to make an impact for the Thomas More Saints and more.
“I want to focus obviously on getting a degree and graduating college, but also playing football and – most importantly – just making an impact on players’ lives in the locker room and whoever I meet along the way,” he said.
