GRC students recognized by Youth Salute

Forty-five students from George Rogers Clark High School are among the 873 high school juniors from 53 high schools in Central Kentucky recognized in this year’s “Youth Salute.”

The 39th annual awards ceremony was held in their honor Sunday, May 5, at Georgetown College.

Students were nominated by teachers, guidance counselors and principals for this year’s Youth Salute.

To qualify, the student had to be a junior (senior class of 2020), have a 3.0 GPA or better and have held at least two  leadership roles to which they were chosen by their peers or an adult leader within the past two years in school, religious or community sponsored organizations.

The Sun will feature several students each week.

Katelyn Francis

Katelyn is a member of the Clark County FFA executive leadership team, where she served as secretary in 2018-19 and as the public relations committee chairperson in 2017-18. She is also a Clark County FFA Parliamentary Procedure Team leader. She was leadership chair for the Clark County 4-H Teen Leadership Club for 2018-19 and served as a Clark County 4-H teen delegate for the South Region Teen Leadership Conference in 2018 and 2019. She is communication coordinator on the Kentucky Natural Gaited Horse Association Jr. Board of Directors. She is a member of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls Magoffin Assembly No. 47, where she is a past worthy advisor and chaplain. She is also a member and volunteer at Christ Church Winchester.

She plans to pursue a degree in interdisciplinary early childhood education and become a preschool teacher in Clark County.

Kierstyn Newton

Kierstyn has been an EKU Now participation for 2018-19 and 2019-20. She is a member of the Clark County FFA, and was the FFA Parliamentary Procedures Team recruitment office for 2018-19. She is a member of the Junior Cattleman’s Association and Beta Club. She participates in the GRC theater program, and was a cast member in “The Music Man” and “Annie.” She has been a GRC dual credit program participant in 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years. She played junior varsity and varsity basketball for GRC for the 2015-16 school year. She received the Green Hand Award for the FFA program, and is the recipient of the EKU Now scholarship for ACT score achievement. She plans to attend Eastern Kentucky University and major in nursing to become a nurse practitioner.

Lillie Seay

Lillie is a Kentucky 4-H Performing Arts Troupe board member. She studies visual arts in the GRC Fine Arts Cohort. She is public relations officer for the 4-H Teen Leadership Club and a teen leader for the 4-H Art Club. She has also been a 4-H camp counselor and camp class instructor. She is a section leader for the GRC choir, Cardinal Singers. She works with the GRC theater program as a cast member and the set production team. She plans to major in visual arts and arts education with the hopes of being an art teacher.

Liza Holley

Liza is a varsity cheerleader and a member of the Smoke Signals student newspaper staff. She is a member of National Honor Society, Beta Club and Student Leadership. She was named KHSAA All Academic for her 4.0 GPA. She also works as a Red Cross lifeguard. She plans to attend the University of Kentucky and major in public relations and communications.

Madison Williams

Madison is vice president of the Clark County FFA. She serves FFA through the Parliamentary Procedure team and the Thanksgiving food baskets drive. She is president of the 4-H Teen Leadership Club and the 4-H Horse Club. She is a 4-H Junior Camp Counselor. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and the Rockin R Rhythm Riders Drill Team. She volunteers for Operation Happiness and Empty Bowls. She plans to major in business managements with hopes of attending the University of Kentucky.

Makayla King

Makayla is vice president of Beta Club. She is also a member of the Green Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Smoke Signals multimedia staff. She is a Bluegrass Youth Ballet pre-professional dancer. She is also an Allegro Dance Project Health Movement Acolyte. She serves as a Special Olympics coach, and volunteers for the Down Syndrome Association, Lexington VA and Bluegrass Honor Flight. She plans to major in exercise science with hopes of becoming a physical therapist.

Megan Stults

Megan has been a director at large for the KY Quarter Horse Youth Association since 2017. She has also been vice president of the Clark County Ponies & Partners 4-H Horse Club since 2017, and was treasurer in 2016. She is a member of the Clark County FFA, FFA horse judging team, FFA horsemanship team. She has earned the FFA Green Hand and Chapter Degree. She is also a member of the Mt. Zion Christian Church youth group and mission group. She plans to major in elementary education at Morehead State University.
