Even though the season ended, the recognition of the 2019 George Rogers Clark girls soccer team continues to roll in.

Over the weekend, the 10th Region coaches met to vote on the All-Region team for this past season. There are first, second and third teams recognized and an offensive and defensive player of the year award given out.

The first team has 12 slots while the second and third team have 13 slots each, bringing the total to 38 players selected for the teams. Of those 38 players, the Lady Cardinals had seven girls selected and had the offensive player of the year, Delaney Manning.

Manning, Allie Bush and Leslie Hernandez were selected to the first team. Julia Pohl and Caitlin Bowling were selected for the second team and Caitlin Fike and Shelby Vaughn were selected for the third team.

Manning led the team in goals with 39, and by the end of her season was 16th in the state in goals scored. She also added 11 assists during her senior season.

Bush was the team’s second-leading scorer, finishing with 23 goals. Her 14 assists tied her for the second most assists on the team.

The other player who finished the year with 14 assists was fellow first team selection Hernandez.

Hernandez finished the year as the third-leading scorer on the team with 21 goals but averaged the second-most goals per game.

Pohl and Bowling, both defensive players, were the team’s second team selections. Assists and goals scored don’t show the impact the defenders have on games, but Pohl finished the season with seven goals and 10 assists and played in all 27 games for the Lady Cardinals and Bowling tacked on a goal and an assist during her senior season.

Fike, one of the third team selections from GRC, is also a defender but picked up four goals on the year including a three-goal game in the postseason against St. Patrick. Fike also appeared in every game for the Lady Cardinals.

The three defenders selected for all-region teams helped the Cardinals’ defense go to the next level in the postseason, allowing only two goals in six games, one of which was a penalty kick.

The final All-Region selection was Vaughn, the team’s leader in assists with 19. Vaughn was also the fifth-leading scorer for the Cardinals with 18 goals and appeared in all 27 games.
