The Stuff the Bus school supplies drive started Saturday, but this year there’s no school bus to stuff.

Instead, there are bins just inside the entrance of Walmart and at College Park on Wheeler Avenue.

This is the second year Clark County Public Schools’ family resource and youth services centers have teamed up with The Salvation Army and Walmart to collect supplies for schoolchildren heading back to classes.

This year the Summer Involvement Program (SIP) is also a partner, and the supplies will be distributed to families during a drive-through Readifest on Friday, Aug. 28, from 4 to 8 p.m. at College Park.

This is the 23rd year the community has had the back-to-school festival to provide needed supplies for students.

“Because of COVID, everything is different this year,” Eva Miller, FRYSC coordinator for Justice Elementary, said Monday.

Not only is there no school bus filled with things like notebooks, pencils, folders, scissors and crayons, but there won’t be tables set up where kids can pick up supplies. Each car that goes by will get one grab bag of items.

“Parents can just drive through and get the school supplies,” Miller said.

Items needed include No. 1 pencils, two-pocket folders, glue sticks, notebooks and looseleaf notebook paper, both wide- and college-ruled, crayons and markers, scissors, hand-held pencil sharpeners, black dry erase markers and colored pencils.

The best times to donate at College Park are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Donations are accepted at Walmart when the store is open.
