This week Bluegrass Greensource will organize more than a thousand volunteers across Central Kentucky for community-led litter pick ups in 20 cities, including downtown Winchester.

Bluegrass Greensource and organizing sites are recruiting volunteers to help clear streets, streams, sidewalks, and parks of litter and debris in celebration of Earth Month.

Main Street Clean Sweep in Winchester, sponsored by the City of Winchester, will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. Volunteers should meet at City Hall, and may come at any point during the event.

Bluegrass Greensource provides volunteers an event T-shirt (as supplies last) bags, gloves and litter grabbers. Main Street Clean Sweep 2017 in all 20 communities is presented by PNC Bank, Stites & Harbison, Valvoline, and WEKU.

Last year, 1,007 volunteers in 22 communities filled 515 bags with litter and removed nearly four tons of waste.

“Bluegrass Greensource organizes Main Street Clean Sweep as a way to help Central Kentuckians feel empowered during Earth Month,” said Amy Sohner, Bluegrass Greensource executive director. “Since Earth Day falls on a Saturday this year, we anticipate even more participation than in years past.”

This year, clean-ups are also planned in Burgin, Cynthiana, Frankfort, Georgetown, Harrodsburg, Irvine, Lancaster, Lawrenceburg, Lexington, Nicholasville, New Middletown, Paris, Ravenna, Richmond, Sadieville, Stamping Ground, Stanford, Versailles and Wilmore.

Main Street Clean Sweep is held rain or shine. All litter and debris collected during Main Street Clean Sweep will be properly disposed of by the local Divisions of Waste Management.
