The Moonlight Movie Night series will return for its fourth year at the Winchester campus of Bluegrass Community and Technical College July 14, kicking off with a unique singing competition.

The movie nights take place outside the campus on The Green and are projected on a 200-foot screen.

According to Campus Director Bruce Manley, the competition is the first of its kind for the movie series, inspired by the subject matter of the first movie, “Sing” sponsored by Ale-8-One and Kentucky Bank.

“We like to theme the activities around the movie we’ll be watching,” Manley said.

The competition will be modeled after the popular television show “The Voice.” Manley said participants are asked to bring their own music to sing to, or a musical instrument they can play for accompaniment.

Manley said that so far about seven people have registered for the competition with several others interested. He said by the time of the competition, BCTC expects about 20 participants.

The participants will perform for a panel of judges, who will then deliberate while audiences are entertained by Lexington band Big Sound.

The results of the competition will be announced before the movie begins, with winners receiving trophies and bragging rights.

Movie nights will continue July 21, when Amazon and the Clark County Health Department sponsor a showing of the new “Beauty and the Beast” movie, accompanied by a performance by Dancer’s Pointe. Manley said children attending the movie night are encouraged to dress up like their favorite Disney character.

The series ends July 28 with a screening of “The Lego Batman Movie” sponsored by Clark Regional Medical Center and Winchester Federal Bank. The night will be superhero night, and families are encouraged to dress up as their favorite superheroes.

The screening will coincide with Readifest, which offers back-to-school supplies to families. Manley said the Readifest night attracted 1,000 people last year.

The movie nights also feature free games and inflatables for families, food and drinks for sale and several vendors.

Manley said the event has grown in popularity every year, with this year having more sponsors than any other.

“This is an experience you can’t get anywhere else,” Manley said. “We wouldn’t be able to do this without our sponsors.”

BCTC is an alcohol-free and tobacco-free campus.
