George Rogers Clark High School students were among those recognized by the annual Central Kentucky Youth Leadership Council’s “Youth Salute.”

There were 46 students recognized from GRC among the 843 high school juniors from 543 high schools in Central Kentucky.

The annual awards ceremony was May 21, where Sara Walters was named the top Youth Leader from GRC. Walters was also one of five participants to receive a $500 scholarship for an ACT/SAT preparation course provided by Class 101.

The Central Kentucky Council on Youth Leadership was formed in 1980 to conduct the “Youth Salute” in nearby counties in cooperation with the National Council on Youth Leadership, a non-profit organization. Students were nominated by teachers, guidance counsellors and principal’s for this year’s “Youth Salute.” In order to qualify, the student must be a junior (senior class of 2018), have a 3.0 GPA or better and have held at least two leadership roles for which they were chosen by their peers or an adult leader within the past two years in school, religious or community-sponsored organizations.

Several students from GRC will be featured in The Sun weekly.

Haley Hannan

Haley’s accomplishments include student Y-Club member, Beta Club member, National Honor Society, FCCLA member, principal’s list, Futbol Club of Kentucky team captain, First United Methodist Church member and member of GRC girls varsity soccer team. Haley would like to major in computer science and pursue a career at a major technology company.

Hannah Thomas

Hannah’s accomplishments include Beta Club, National Honor Society, Project-Based Learning Leadership class, National Society of High School Scholars. She volunteers with the summer reading program and at Winchester’s Build a Better Block. She is a homecoming attendant, an EKU Now dual-credit stidents and a tutor for fifth- and sixth-graders.

Hannah plans to attend the University of Kentucky and become an occupational therapist.

JoAnna Soliz

JoAnna’s accomplishments include serving a tea for widowed ladies, helping with the children’s nursery at Bryan Station Baptist Church, a Girl Scout camp counselor, making fruit baskets for Thanksgiving and sending anonymous Christmas cards to people. At school, she is a member of HOSA, the GRC band and has perfect attendance.

JoAnna plans to attend Morehead State University and become a pediatric nurse practitioner.

Jaycie Raney

Jaycie’s accomplishments include being the GRC marching band drum major, fine arts cohort instrumental major, playing the flute and piccolo in the GRC marching and symphonic bands, a University of Kentucky Honor Band flute, National Honor Society, 4-H junior counselor, Clark County Republican Women, a George N. Parks Drum Major Academy graduate, a Bands of America Leadership Experience participant and a Badns of America Drum Major Institute graduate.

Jaycie will major in music education, and composition and theory and dreams of being a music professor or band director.

Jania Bell

Jania’s accomplishments include the YMCA Leadership Teen conference, Young Democrats club member, Spanish Club, Gear Up Kentucky student, Beta Club, National Honor Society member Black Achievers, a 3.5 GPA and junior high volleyball volunteer service.

Jania wants to earn a degree in biology with a minor in Spanish and become a pediatric surgeon or neurosurgeon oncologist.
