Sure, the Daniel Boone Pioneer Festival and the Winchester Labor Day Committee’s events may dominate Labor Day weekend, but there are other things happening as well.

Chief among those is the fifth annual Homer Ledford Dulcimer Festival at Campbell Junior High School, 620 Boone Ave.

Registration begins tonight and there will be classes throughout Saturday in dulcimer, ukelele, pennywhistle and Native America whistle, organizer Dana McCall said.

Ledford began making instruments as a teenager. His skill and demand for his dulcimers, banjos, guitars and other instruments, ultimately led him to forsake a teaching career to make instruments full-time. He died in 2006 at age 79.

The doors to the school open at 8 a.m. Saturday followed by classes at 9 a.m. McCall said there will be dulcimers on display and vendors in the school lobby.

The concert is set to begin at 6 p.m. Saturday in the school auditorium. Concert tickets are $5 for those not registered for classes. Registration is $80, which includes classes and the Saturday evening concert.
