At 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aida Bermudez, education coordinator for the Hummel Planetarium at Eastern Kentucky University, will present a program entitled “Astronomy: From Dreams to Discovery.”

If you have ever gone to one of the awesome sky shows under the dome of Hummel, you have probably heard Aida’s voice narrating the program.

Tuesday evening, Aida will acquaint us with stars and planets visible now in the evening sky and explain how speculations resulting from simple naked-eye astronomy (observing the sky without instruments like telescopes or binoculars) eventually led to current mind-boggling descriptions of the universe.

Summer is a great time to get outside in the evening to view planets and stars. A beauty of summer is leaning back in a lawn chair or lying in the grass looking up and imagining a trip to the stars.

It’s even more fun when you know you can spot a few planets and name some constellations.

Watching fireflies is pretty groovy, too.

Aida’s program is free and open to the public, and is suitable for ages 15 and older. It will interest astronomy novices or dedicated observers.

From 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, representatives from Benchmark Family Services Foster Care will be at the library presenting an open information session, “How to Become a Foster Family.”

Attendees will learn the basics of becoming a foster parent with Benchmark Family Services, which is a network of professional, therapeutic foster homes and committed staff across the state of Kentucky which provides stable, out-of-home placements for children in need.

Information will include qualifications for becoming a foster parent, steps to become a licensed foster home, the Benchmark agency mission and services. There will be a question-answer session and light refreshments will be provided. Please register to attend.

From 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, MACED Project Specialist Amy Williams and Women’s Business Center of KY Director Phyllis Alcorn will present a business-planning workshop called “Starting and Financing Your Business.”

If you are thinking of starting or owning a new small business in Winchester or anywhere in Kentucky, Amy and Phyllis will help you understand the financial basics for success. The Adult Summer Reading Program officially begins at 9 a.m. Monday. There is a new library book bag for this summer and you can register to win one of two $75 gift certificates to Barnes and Noble or one of two $75 gift certificates to Half-Price books.

At 2 p.m. Wednesday, Kentucky Picture Show presents a 2016 drama about an arthritic Nova Scotia woman who works as a housekeeper while she hones her skills as an artist and eventually becomes a beloved figure in the community. Rated PG-13.

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, trivia at the Engine House Pizza Pub. The only quiz show better than Jeopardy.

At 10 a.m. Friday, Write Local. What actually is “the exception that proves the rule?”

At 9 a.m. Saturday, June 8, yoga on the library lawn returns. This year’s summer sessions are taught by Kathy Howard and Shannon Phelps. A big namaste! to both. Please bring your own yoga mat. Meet in the community room if it rains.
