Bluegrass Trails and Greenways awarded $10,000 grant

Bluegrass Trails and Greenways has been awarded a $10,000 Paula Nye Grant for public awareness and to promote safety in bicycling in Clark County.

The grant was awarded by the Kentucky Bicycle and Bikeway Commission, which represents the interests of cyclists to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

Commissioner Randy Thomas said this was the second time grant funds have gone to Clark County, and the community is earning a good reputation within the program.

“Their application was outstanding,” Thomas said. “They fit the purpose well and we’re sure the grant will be well executed.”

Clark County GIS Director Stephen Berry said the money from the grant will be used to purchase bikes for the Winchester-Clark County Parks Department, fund a media campaign to educate people about bicycle safety and send Don Cartwright, a Winchester resident and member of the Bluegrass Cycling Club, to be trained as a bicycle safety training specialist.

“We’re thrilled to help improve the health and wellbeing of the community,” Thomas said.

He added that Bluegrass Trails and Greenways will be eligible to receive grant funds again next year, if the organization chooses to submit an application.

The Paula Nye Grant is named after Paula Nye, Kentucky’s first bicycle and pedestrian coordinator. The funds for the grant come from the purchase of “Share the Road” license plates.
