Winchester Police are warning local businesses about groups soliciting funds on behalf of the George Rogers Clark High School football boosters.

So far, three businesses have lost hundreds of dollars to people claiming to be raising money for the boosters, when they are not.

The boosters posted a message on social media saying there is a group from Lexington contacting local businesses for donations, often mentioning a football calendar.

Winchester Police Capt. James Hall said the department was notified earlier this week and asked the boosters to post the information. It appears the initial contact with businesses was made over the telephone, but people have been showing up at businesses to collect the money, he said.

“We believe it’s tied to someone who is committing these crimes in several jurisdictions,” Hall said, though its probably limited to Central Kentucky. “This is just some enterprising people locally.”

So far, only three businesses have been identified which lost money in the scam, Hall said.
