The Clark County grand jury may have the final word on whether anyone is charged in connection with a dog attack that killed a Clark County woman in November.

Clark County Sheriff Berl Perdue Jr. said investigators are finishing up the investigation and plan to present the evidence to the grand jury for its consideration, possibly in January.

So far, no charges have been filed in connection with April Collins’ death on Nov. 2, 2018.

According to the sheriff’s office, Collins was mauled by a pit bull inside her home on Verna Drive in Clark County.

Perdue said Collins was unresponsive when her husband found her the evening before. She died the following morning at the University of Kentucky Medical Center from her injuries.

At the time, Perdue said it was at least the third time the dog had bitten Collins in about six weeks. Collins was treated at Clark Regional Medical Center on Sept. 29 for facial injuries from the dog. The investigation determined she was also bitten by the dog on Oct. 31, but it was not reported.

The Collinses adopted the dog in July 2017 when it was about nine weeks old. A second pit bull in the home was not involved in the attack.

The dog was taken into custody and was being kept at the Clark County Animal Shelter.
