What’s Happening at the Library: Kentuckians’ relationship with the environment

By John Maruskin

Clark County Public Library

At 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, the library’s discussion group, Meeting of Minds, welcomes Clark County Environmental Educator Erin Sliney, who will present “Kentuckians and the Environment: Our Past, Present and Future Relationship with the Land.”

Erin will discuss how Kentuckians, from earliest Indigenous People to today’s residents, have interacted with, benefited from and changed the natural environment.

Since Erin is a talented musician and songwriter, she will perform relevant songs throughout the presentation.

The program will conclude with an open discussion by everyone attending.

If you’re interested in Kentucky’s history and environment, if you have ideas or concerns about development and sustainability, if you have a story about a beautiful locale, if you would like to share gardening tips, come to Tuesday’s Meeting of Minds and join the discussion.

Registration is recommended, but not necessary

At 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, horror fiction writer,James Gardner, one of the hardest working authors in the business, will offer a writing workshop called Get a Writer’s Body (of Work).

TV and magazines suggest summer’s the time to get fit for swimsuit season, which involves developing a routine of diet and exercise to help shed pounds, build muscle, and generally feel better.

The same approach can be applied to writing to develop habits and strategies to build a buff body of written work.

— Eating/reading: You are what you eat and you write what you read.

We’ll look at what your voice is and how best to feed it.

— Writing/working out: Look at your habits and develop a writing workout program that gets you writing regularly to strengthen your creative muscles.

— Develop goals: 5k? Bodybuilding competition? Blog? Novel? Learn how to plan your writing goals?

Where do you want to publish?

Who is your audience?

How much time can you devote to getting there?

James excels at horror fiction. His work has been accepted in three new anthologies in the past two years.

However, his workshop will be for any writer who wants to develop better writing habits and clear writing, audience and publishing goals.

Seating is limited, so please register to attend.

You can check out James’ writing in “Schlock Horror” (Call No. Fantasitic F Schl) or “Song Stories: Dark Side of the Moon” (Call No. Fantastic F Song), or on his blog, “The Foreboding Home of the Scary Librarian,” bewarethescarylibrarian.blogspot.com. Or, stop by and say hello to him at the library’s circulation desk.
