County tables first reading of new budget

It will be later this month before the Clark County Fiscal Court votes on the first reading of its budget.

The court was scheduled to have the first vote on the proposed fiscal year 2020 budget during Wednesday’s regular meeting.

Magistrate Daniel Konstantopoulos, though, requested to table the first reading until he received additional information from the jail staff about its portion of the budget. The motion was approved with a 4-2 vote. Magistrates Travis Thompson and Robert Blanton voted no, and Magistrate Greg Elkins was absent.

Clark County Judge-Executive Chris Pace said the first reading could be during the court’s May 23 regular meeting or during a special meeting. Both readings must be approved by the end of the fiscal year June 30. State law also requires county budgets to be reviewed by the Department of Local Government. Changes made by the state can not be reversed by the fiscal court.

The proposed budget totals slightly more than $15.8 million, which is less than the current budget, Pace said previously. It also includes $650,000 for two new fire trucks and the anticipated pension increases.

In other action, the court:

— voted to hire Jerry Miller for the county road department.

— accepted the bid of Detroit Sale form the 2019 KACo salt auction.

— declared two ovens, a stove and a 2007 Ford Explorer as surplus from the Clark County Detention Center.

— approved a bid of $9,800 from American Legal Publishing Corp. to publish the county’s ordinances.

— voted to end the contract with Immediate Response Spill Technology, which was working to recover costs from the Stuff Recycling fire in 2018. Pace said expenses from the fire surpassed $450,000 but the best offer the company could negotiate was $10,000.
