Organizers hope the weather will cooperate with this weekend’s River Sweep cleanup along the Kentucky River.

Clark County Solid Waste Coordinator Gary Epperson said this will be the 25th event between officials in Clark and Madison counties.

“Last year, we canceled twice,” Epperson said. “We had high water and it was dangerous for people to get out on the river. This year it looks good. It’s supposed to be dry and not too hot.”

The event begins at 9 a.m. Saturday on the beach at Fort Boonesborough State Park. Epperson said there will be boats to carry volunteers to the Clark County side of the river to pick up trash along the bank.

The river naturally deposits a lot of garbage from upstream below the dam. Below the park, there is little trash, he said.

Overall the amount of trash seems to be less than recent years, he said.

“We usually wind up with a couple dump trucks full of garbage,” Epperson said. “I don’t think it’s going to be as bad as last year. If we have plenty of volunteers, it shouldn’t take us too long.”

There will be a cookout lunch for all volunteers at noon, and all participants will receive a T-shirt.

Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes and leather gloves, he said.
