Nailed It or Failed It: Ginger-peach smoothie

found today’s recipe for Ginger-Peach Smoothie in an advertisement Kroger sends out called My Magazine.

Ginger-Peach Smoothie

INGREDIENTS

— 1 ripe banana, chopped

— 2 cups chopped peaches, plus more for garnish

— 1 cup plain yogurt

— 1 tablespoon peeled, minced fresh ginger

— 1/4 cup orange juice

— 1/8 teaspoon salt

INSTRUCTIONS

Place all ingredients (except garnish) in blender and puree until smooth and pourable. Pour into two glasses and serve, garnishing with extra chopped peaches. Refrigerate any leftovers.

I typically like smoothies and this one looked refreshing. I knew I’d be trying it as soon as I could buy some peaches.

The recipe calls for plain yogurt. I don’t like yogurt, but I knew the flavor would be disguised by the other ingredients.

I have fresh ginger in the freezer (I guess you could call it fresh, it’s been in there a little while, but it was fresh when I froze it).

When I spotted the recipe, local peaches were available at the farmers’ market.

I headed out early Saturday morning and took in all the great stuff at our local market before I ended my adventure at the My Father’s Garden booth.

After chatting a bit, I found just what I was looking for: local peaches. I bought a few and headed home.

The peaches were still a little firm so I let them sit on the counter a couple days.

I picked up yogurt on the last trip to the grocery and it was waiting to be used in this smoothie recipe.

Because frozen ginger is easily grated, I removed a little piece from the bag of Monday morning when I was ready to prepare the smoothie.

Since I was home alone, I halved this recipe. All I needed was one serving for my breakfast.

If it turned out well, I’d have enough ingredients to make another one the next morning.

Monday morning after getting ready for work, I peeled and chopped one cup full of peaches and put it in my blender’s individual serving container.

I sliced the banana right into the container, then scooped in the yogurt, poured in the orange juice, threw in the salt and then grated the ginger and added it too.

I turned on the blender and let it go until the mixture appeared smooth.

Since the individual container is a glass, I was going to enjoy my smoothie right from the container, that way I’d have one less dirty dish.

I didn’t garnish my smoothie; it didn’t need to look pretty for me to enjoy.

I smiled and took a big drink.

I swallowed and immediately knew this stuff wasn’t for me.

I could not taste peaches. I could not taste banana. I could not taste ginger. All I tasted was plain yogurt. Which, to me, tastes like chalk.

Unfortunately, the other ingredients didn’t mask the taste at all. Yuck!

I didn’t bother giving this a second swallow, I just poured it down the drain and got my trusty ole Honey Nut Cheerio’s out for breakfast.

Needless to say, this recipe is a total failed it in my book. I was so disappointed.

I just knew I’d found a healthy breakfast choice, but not this time. And I wasted some of those yummy peaches.
