Those looking for a burst of color should stop by the cafeteria at George Rogers Clark High School this weekend.

The Kentucky Daffodil and Bulb Society is having its third annual competition and show this weekend and organizers are expecting hundreds of different kinds of daffodils this year.

KDBS member Mike Kuduk said he anticipates about 750 stems for this year’s show, which would be comparable to the 2016 event.

Daffodils, he said, come in more colors than white and yellow. There are up to 3,000 different varieties of the annual flower.

“At our show, you’ll see close to 500 varieties,” Kuduk said, including some orange, pink and red.

There are people in California, he said, who are developing green daffodils, though none are expected in Winchester.

There will also be a class of daffodils catalogued prior to 1940, called historics. Daffodils have been recorded as far back as 1850, he said.

“We think it’s interesting to show something that’s been around for 100 years,” he said.

Kentucky, he said, is a prime spot for growing daffodils, thanks to a high phosphorus content in the soil. A mild winter this year helps too, he said.

The show is open to the public from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Judging will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Entries will be accepted tonight.
