Winchester Players production of Disney’s ‘Newsies’ opens today
The pressure is on for the cast of the Winchester Players latest production as “Newsies” is what inspired Kelly Estes to pursue directing.
“This was the show that made me want to direct,” Estes said of “Newsies.”
Estes said she has been thinking about how she would direct the musical for 27 years, and she is finally seeing her dream come to life after the rights were released last year.
“I knew I had to do it,” Estes said said.
The Winchester Players debuts Disney’s “Newsies” at 7:30 p.m. today at Campbell Junior High School. Performances continue at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and ends with a 2:30 p.m. performance Sunday.
And Estes said the 50 member cast did not disappoint when it comes to bringing her vision to life.
“They really have stepped up,” she said.
“Newsies the Musical” is based on Disney’s 1992 film of the same name which drew inspiration from the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City. Alan Menken wrote the music for the show, which Emily Hutchison, who plays Katherine, said should be enough to draw in any Disney fan.
Hutchison said people will also enjoy the show for its underlying message of hope: young people can make a difference when they stand up for what they believe in — a message still relevant today.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children under 13.
