Holly Rood to host pig pickin’
Officials with Holly Rood want to purchase markers for Gov. James Clark’s loved ones who are buried on site, and think a barbecue might do the trick.
The Winchester-Clark County Historical Commission is hosting a “Pig Pickin for the Past” at the mansion on Beckner Street Oct. 19.
Commission Vice President Steve Justice said the event is new, and will hopefully continue for many years.
Pooh’s Cue and the Clark County Constable Association have donated the food, he said, which will be served on the property. The house itself will be open for self-guided tours as well.
There will also be a cash bar with products from Abettor Brewing and local wineries, he said.
Tickets are $20 each, and only 150 are available, he said.
Proceeds will go toward Holly Rood, which was the home of Clark and his family. The home was built in 1814.
“One of the priorities is the James Clark monument,” he said. “Buried there with him are his wife and their children.”
There are no markers for his wife and children, he said. The commission would like to install marble markers for them. Other projects could include installing lights for the monument as well as the flagpole, which was recently installed on the property.
James Clark was Kentucky’s 13th governor. Prior to being elected governor, Clark served in Congress as well as both the Kentucky House of Representatives and the Kentucky Senate. While governor, public schools were established in every county and the state board of education was formed.
Clark was elected governor in 1836, but died in office in 1839 before he completed his term.
