As winter turns toward spring and the days get longer with warmer weather, opportunities open themselves up for more outdoor activities.

Thankfully, Legacy Grove Park can provide for the community.

With a series of upcoming events, there will be plenty for individuals to keep themselves occupied.

“We kind of find it [to be] our responsibility to provide outdoor education opportunities for the residents of Clark County,” stated Anna Campomanes, the event and marketing coordinator for Legacy Greenscapes. “The kids that come and the parents that come…really want to be there! It’s kind of a different learning environment.”

Though numerous programs are available, there are three in mind worth mentioning.

With education being geared toward individuals of all ages, Legacy Grove Park presents Blooming Buddies and Blooming Babies.

It will happen at 3:30 each Thursday, beginning on March 21 through April 11. It will encompass four sessions and an after-school “Blooming Buddies” program is geared toward kids between 5 and 11.

Children will have an opportunity to learn about the growth cycle of sunflowers, which can be used as ornamentals in different gardens, grown as a crop for its edible oily seeds, and more.

“The first program is about the soil and how we’re going to learn that the soil is alive. There’s microbes, there’s grubs, there’s worms, and [we’re going to learn] what they do to help a plant grow,” Campomanes said.

Future sessions will learn about plant growth, how water interacts, utilizing essential elements, and more.

Ultimately, individuals will be able to indulge in eating sunflower butter, sunflower seeds, and more.

Earlier on Thursday, at 10:00 a.m., the “Blooming Babies” portion of the event for infants through three-year-olds  occurs.

“There’s going to be sensory play,” Campomanes said. “We’re just going to have them…be babies in a setting where there’s not a lot of big kids around.”

On Monday, April 8, in partnership with the Kentucky River Foothills Development Council, Legacy Grove Park will host a Solar Eclipse Viewing Party.

“They’re going to be handing out eclipse viewing glasses,” Campomanes said. “We’re going to have a [relaxing] time, and we encourage people to come out with their picnics and picnic blankets.”

While a connector service is available from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Legacy Grove is scheduled to be present until approximately 3:00 p.m.

Certainly, not least, an Earth Day celebration will take place on Saturday, April 20.

“We have sixteen community booths coming. The Clark County Farm Bureau is going to have a grill out so we can have free food,” Campomanes said, noting that the Kentucky Department of Forestry will also be present. “There’s going to be a litter cleanup and music…That’s happening from April 20 from 10 [a.m.] to 2 [p.m.].”

Attendees can expect to find Stuff Recycling and The Kentucky Riverkeeper, among other organizations.

For Campomanes, who took on her position in February and has a background in horticulture, such events provide excitement.

“I just think everything’s so cool and I want to share that love and fascination [about] the outdoor experience,” she said.
