GRC sports notebook: Baseball and tennis get off to solid starts

Spring sports are underway for George Rogers Clark High School. How have the Cards and Lady Cards done? Read below to find out!

Baseball

Headed into the week of Monday, March 25, the George Rogers Clark High School baseball team holds a record of 4-2.

On Thursday, March 21, the Cards headed to Lexington Catholic High School to take on the defending 11th Region Champion Knights (7-3). 

After jumping out to an early 6-0 lead with three-run third and fourth innings, the team’s pitching carried them to a convincing 7-2 win. 

Caden Spicer, Brady Davis, Ben Fulks, and JP Gaines each had two hits, with Spicer scoring three RBIs and Fulks adding two of his own. 

Over six innings, Jordan Soliz and Brady Davis allowed just one hit while striking out a combined 10 batters. 

The Cards have also seen wins this season against Bryan Station, Oldham County and Franklin County. 

Softball

Under new head coach Brian Caudill, the Lady Cards started the season with a 1-8 record. 

In a victory over Paris (1-6) on Monday, March 19, the Lady Cards routed the Lady Greyhounds 24-4 in just four innings of play. 

The team came through with 15 hits, including two from Arabella Guinn, Kennedy Estep, Meredith Fryman, Aniya McIntyre, and Emma Ensey.

 Estep led the way with 4 RBIs, while Guinn – the starting and winning pitcher – added 3 RBIs thanks to a pair of doubles.

 The Lady Cards also benefited from a pair of RBIs by McKenzie Bush. 

Tennis

Having begun their season on Thursday, March 7, the Cards and Lady Cards have seen success on the tennis court. 

In singles matches at North Laurel High School on Friday, March 16, Gratz McCraith won by consecutive scores of 6-3.

On Thursday, March 21, in the doubles competition, the Cards saw victories from the Calvin Roach and Gabriel Palmer team while competing at Model Laboratory High School. 

Rylan Graves has also seen early success in the singles competition. 

For the Lady Cards, Lauren Anderson was victorious in a matchup at Corbin High School on Saturday, March 16, after finishing strong in her third set. 

In a singles matchup at North Laurel High School, also on Saturday, March 16, Sydney Ely defeated her opponent 6-3 and 6-2. Last year’s state-qualifying doubles duo of Madelyn Settles and Cassi Lowe won the doubles competition by scores of 6-3 and 6-4. Anna Barnes and Grace Cecil were also successful in the doubles competition. 

Lowe and Settles won again in the doubles competition at Model Laboratory School on Thursday, March 21, by scores of 6-4 and 6-1, as did the team of Caroline Brookshire and Maci Hutchinson. Karlee Gray was also victorious in the singles competition.
