Traffic stop nets half-pound of crystal meth

Law enforcement officials found more than cookies inside a crumpled box during a traffic stop Wednesday morning.

Ultimately, officers and deputies confiscated about a half-pound of crystal meth and arrested a Florida man on a trafficking charge.

State police troopers and Clark County deputies made the traffic stop near the 94 mile marker on Interstate 64 around 2 a.m. Wednesday.

According to court documents, a police K9 unit alerted on the presence of narcotics in the vehicle. Following a search, officers found a Thin Mint box hidden behind the glove compartment. Inside the box was a plastic bag containing about eight ounces of crystal meth.

The passenger in the vehicle, 45-year-old Shane Smith of Jupiter, Florida, was arrested and charged with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance. The driver was not charged.

Clark County Sheriff Berl Perdue Jr. said Smith may be a mid- to high-level dealer.
