The suspect in a Super Bowl Sunday home invasion died in the hospital, Winchester Police said.

Brandon Van Cleve, 27, was taken to the University of Kentucky Medical Center Sunday following the incident at 101 Finley Road. Van Cleve died in the hospital at about 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Winchester Police Capt. James Hall said.

The Fayette County Coroner’s office requested an autopsy, he said, though the cause of death is pending the result of toxicology testing, which can take several weeks to complete.

According to the coroner’s office, neither trauma nor the alleged incident were related to Van Cleave’s death.

Officers were called to the home at 8:39 p.m. Sunday after a man broke through a glass door at the residence, injuring himself in the process. 

“He ended up throwing a chair through the door and coming on through,” Hall said.

Some of the adults inside had restrained and detained Van Cleve before officers arrived on the scene, Hall said. 

Van Cleve had been hospitalized since he was taken into custody. Hall said previously Van Cleve would be charged with first-degree burglary, once he was released from the hospital. 

The occupants of the home were not injured and nothing was taken from the residence, Hall said.
