A Georgia company announced plans Tuesday to start making biodegradable and compostable plastics in Winchester and create at least 37 jobs in the process.

Danimer Scientific, based in Bainbridge, Georgia, is working to purchase the former Alltech manufacturing facility in the Winchester Industrial Park and revamp the 88,000 square foot facility to meet its needs, according to a press release from Gov. Matt Bevin’s office.

“They have a process … that is different from what Alltech was doing,” Winchester Mayor Ed Burtner said. “My understanding is Danimer will redevelop the building in two phases.”

According to the release, the company plans to begin working on the building as soon as October. Production, though, would not begin until late 2019.

Danimer will use the existing fermentation plant to produce a biopolymer which is then used to make biodegradable and compostable plastic products including food packaging, straws, bottles, shopping bags and other items, according to the release.

The company plans to invest more than $36 million initially in Clark County, according to the release.
