It’s time to clean out the medicine cabinet.

On Saturday, the Winchester Police Department will participate in the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s annual National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., an officer will be on hand at the police department, 16 N. Maple St., to accept expired or unwanted medication. Only pills or capsules will be accepted; liquids or sharp items are not welcome.

“What we ask them to do is bring all their medication in a clear plastic bag,” said WPD Detective Mike Wattenbarger, who is attached to the DEA task force. Pill bottles, especially with identifying information, should be left at home.

At the end of the four hours, the surrendered medication will be consolidated with other agencies’ collections and disposed of, he said.

Through the years, Wattenbarger said participation from the public has slowed significantly, he said, as many know the police department as a drop box in the lobby to accept unwanted medication year-round. The Clark County Sheriff’s Office also has a box in its lobby.

“The first two years, we had up to 50 people,” Wattenbarger said. In recent years, less than a dozen people have shown up, he said.
