With the biggest shopping weekend of the year in full swing, there are a couple local options to join to help boost the economy further.

Saturday is the annual Shop Small Saturday, a national event started by American Express to promote shopping at local small businesses.

In downtown Winchester, a number of businesses will offer specials ad some will be open extra hours, Main Street Winchester director Rachel Alexander said.

“We have partnered with the Bluegrass Small Business Development Center at UK to do a welcome station,” she said. We’ll set up a tent on the sidewalk between the city parking lot and D&S Hardware’s parking lot. We’re doing it there because a lot of people aren’t aware there’s free off-street parking.”

Alexander said they will also be handing out goody bags, while supplies last, including tote bags, Small Business Saturday swag and other items.

“Each business is doing their own promotions and will offer specials to their customers,” she said.

Across the county, Fort Boonesborough State Park will have its annual Winter Trade Days Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Throughout the fort, there will be merchants and traders in 18th century clothing selling and demonstrating their wares.

There is no admission charge for Winter Trade Days.

There will also be workshops with demonstrations of frontier skills including blacksmithing, knitting socks, embroidery and making buttons, according to the Fort Boonesborough Living History website. The fort is located on Ky. 627 just across the Kentucky River in Madison County.
