SPORTS NOTEBOOK: Cards Defeat Bourbon County 7-1

In five matchups this week, the Cards went 1-4 to currently stand at 3-7.

They ended the week on a high note with a victory against Bourbon County.

Their first two matchups resulted in 6-3 losses to Estill County (7-3) and an 11-1 loss to Frederick Douglass (7-3).

In the opening game, Tanner Walton delivered two of the team’s three RBIs, with Caden Spicer having the other. Andrew Hummel struck out five batters through four innings.

Against the Broncos, Brady Davis, Carter Maynard, and Kamden McAlpin accounted for the team’s three hits.
On Saturday, the Cards participated in a double-header in Winchester, and came up on the losing side in both contests. A morning game against Hazard (9-3) in which Zach Brookshire struck out five while Nick Huff brought two to home plate on an RBI double ended in a 5-2 loss.

Later in the day, a matchup with Western Hills (5-8) resulted in a 5-3 defeat despite Huff again delivering two RBIs. Pitching a complete game, Lochlan Hansel finished with seven strikeouts.

On Monday, luck for the Cards changed as they opened up play in the 40th District. In a game over Bourbon County (4-4), the Cards won by a convincing 7-1 score. Tanner Walton led the way offensively with three RBIs in as many at bats, while Nick Huff once again had two and Caden

Spicer came through with one. In a 75-pitch complete game, Jordan Soliz limited the Colonels to just one earned run on four hits with a pair of strikeouts.

The Cards had a scheduled Wednesday game in the Popeyes Chicken Classic, but it was postponed due to rain.

This week, the Cards have a slew of games scheduled – starting with contests Thursday and Friday against Western Hills and Bryan Station (3-3) in the Popeyes Chicken Classic. They’ll look to break even in competition against the Wolverines this season, while toppling the respectable Bryan Station Defenders (3-3).

Next Tuesday, a game against North Laurel (8-4) awaits, while a Wednesday contest against Model (1-8) is also highlghted.
