A man faces multiple charges following an incident at a local Shell gasoline station.

Jazzie Austin, 36, has been charged with theft by unlawful taking or disposition shoplifting, 1st-degree fleeing or evading police on foot, and 1st and 2nd offense alcohol intoxication in a public place.

According to the arrest citation, on Sunday, Jan. 21st, Winchester police were dispatched to an undisclosed Shell location about a male subject who previously shoplifted a container of Delta 8, a cannabinoid producing psychoactive effects, from the Corner Vape & Tobacco Store on N. Maple Street.

When the officer arrived, the owner of the Shell station pointed out Austin, the male in question.

As the officer attempted to contact Austin, he allegedly circled a vehicle, stating he had done nothing wrong.

When the officer walked toward the male, Austin allegedly began running away, crossing multiple lanes of traffic before running north in the northbound lane of Maple Street and crossing over the Southbound lane before getting on the sidewalk.

The officer noted that such actions put Austin and himself at risk of injury.

While running on the sidewalk traveling north on Maple Street, the officer lost sight of Austin as other units began to assist.

Officers found Austin, at which point he identified himself, and brought him to the Shell location, where he was advised of his rights.

Austin allegedly stated that he did shoplift the Delta 8 vape pens from the Corner Vape & Tobacco location previously, and – as he was speaking – officers identified a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his presence.

While he was speaking with officers, he called his sister.

When she asked if he was drunk, he stated that he had indeed taken shots.

Officers later spoke with the owners of the Shell location and Corner Vape & Tobacco, who advised that they recognized Austin as a frequent customer.

The owner of Corner Vape & Tobacco said Austin shoplifted a container of Delta 8 vape pens on Monday, Jan. 15th.

Each pen is about $8, with approximately 50 pens in a single container.

According to the Clark County Detention Center’s website, Austin is not listed as a current inmate, with any proposed court date unknown.
